I know! I know!  This is no where near hair related but FUNNY is FUNNY!!!  Kevin Hart is one of the funniest dudes on the planet right now…..checkout his dis track…all 15 seconds to #KendrickLamar

Why did Kevin Hart create this dis track??? Well Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar set off a firestorm with his verse on Big Sean’s track #Control….he gave the business to all the new rappers…..dudes he’s been on tracks with….he even referenced himself as the King of New York!  I LOVE IT!!!!  I am a hiphop head through and through and I am so glad he shook the rap game up today!Wanna here it?  Here is goes:  #KendrickLamar #Verse

“I’m usually homeboys with the same n—-s i’m rhymin with/ But this is hip-hop and them n—-s should know what time it is/ And that goes for Jermaine Cole, Big K.R.I.T., Wale/ Pusha T, Meek Mill, A$AP Rocky, Drake/ Big Sean, Jay Electron’, Tyler, Mac Miller/ I got love for you all but I’m tryna murder you n—-s/ Tryna make sure your core fans never heard of you n—-s/ They don’t wanna hear not one more noun or verb from you n—as,” the Black Hippy MC rapped with an extra grit to his already gravelly voice.

is that Brandy Norwood??

Brandy's Instagram Afro

Brandy Norwood the Queen of Braids Ms Moesha herself is rocking her Natural Hair!!!!! Brandy was known for rocking her infamous Braids, for YEARS!  Now she posted a pic on Instagram of her beautiful natural hair……this awesome but at the same time sad…..why in Hollywood, African American women have to put a hat on (wig) or weave in to be accepted?  Most of the African American Actresses in Hollywood are Natural!!  But do to the constraints on how they can wear their hair and what roles they’re playing they have to weave it up or wig it out!  I know we will not see many photos of Brandy rocking her natural hair….especially on the Red Carpet and such…..

881909-10151378524691634-27411692-o-1-.jpg Beaufort,  South Carolina native Pamela Jenkins is the CEO & Creator of Koils by Nature hair care products. Koils by Nature is a rising brand of affordable all natural hair care products for ALL types & textures of hair. The brand’s motto is “Where Beauty and Nature Come Together!” With that said, Pamela affectionately known as “Pam” started her business in 2009 after “returning natural” in 2007! Pamela was eagerly trying every product that came out on the market within the natural hair industry. Her passion soon turned into her wanting to learn more about what she was putting on her hair! An avid lover of “all natural foods & body products” quickly became the stimulation for her wanting to learn more about the ingredients inside of the products in which she was using since “going natural”! After reading many books, months of research and configuring formulations by trial and era Koils by Nature was soon to be born!

Koils by Nature was established in 2009 and the web site was launched in February of 2010. Since launching the web site Pamela has worked tirelessly to continue to “brand and expand” her business! Koils by Nature offers a wide variety of “all natural” products for the hair as well as the body! Her business has expanded to now include 11 U.S. retailers and 3 International retailers that carry her brand. She is known for creating exceptional products that are affordable yet encourage building and fortifying the overall health of the hair! She has always said her focus is on giving her base “Quality over Quantity”! She also has a passion for working with small business owners which allows her brand to remain exclusive! Many experts in the natural hair industry love the “hands-on” approach that Pamela gives to her business! She is involved in every facet of her business from the planning, implementing, and execution of everything that involves the Koils by Nature brand! In 2010, Pamela has been featured in the Examiner, NaturallyCurly.com & Afrobella’s “Who Got Next”article, 2012.

Her industry experience includes showcasing her brand at the 2010 Baltimore Natural hair Care Expo & 2011 Spring & Fall Fro’ Fashion Weeks in Atlanta, GA. In 2011 & 2012, Pamela stepped out on faith and took her brand to LARGEST venue in the world for natural hair—“Taliah Waajid presents The World Natural Hair Health &Beauty Show”, in Atlanta, GA where Koils by Nature served as a vendor. She has partnered with many world renowned individuals in the natural hair industry such as: World’s Largest Afro record holder Aevin Dugas, natural hair bloggers: AfroBella, Cassidy of Natural Selections & BeautifulBrwnBabydoll, celebrity stylist Felicia Leatherwood, Natural Chica and many more! In 2011 Pamela created and trademarked her own very well attended event “Koils by Nature presents…..Natural is NOT a Fad!” which is held annually in the Washington, DC merto area. This event brought her much recognition in the natural hair industry and solidified her expertise as an event planner! Pamela has also taken her brand to many other natural hair shows around the country & internationally to the Toronto Natural Hair Expo 2011. She has been invited to teach and be the featured guest at many natural hair events and in-store promo gatherings as well.

Pamela strongly believes in giving back to the community and making sure that her brand is well represented at community wide events! She makes a point to always donate a portion of the proceeds of her events to a charitable cause such as the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation, Lupus & Young marines of Upper Marlboro. Pamela has a strong passion for encouraging, empowering, and motivating young girls. In June 2012 Pamela was invited to be a guest speaker at the Sophisticated Ladies Summer Camp in Southeast, Washington DC, where she spoke to inner city girls about natural beauty and self love.

Before creating Koils by Nature Pamela was a Network Engineer in the US Government. She also served her country by joining the US Army and is extremely proud to be labeled a US Veteran. Pamela graduated from Strayer University, with Bachelors of Science in Computer Information Systems; and plans to continue her education with Tai Sophia Institute pursing a graduate certificate in Herbal Science. Pamela and her 2 sons, currently resides in Temple Hills, MD which also serves as the base for Koils by Nature.

How it all started…….

IThis beautiful photo of Mae of Natural Chica on Facebook attracted me to DFinney.
I sent  Danielle a message on Facebook and found out she was LOCAL and the rest was history!

naturalchicaweb

In September 2012, I invited DFinney to take photos at my annual event Natural is NOT a Fad.
Her photos were features on Essence.com

Koils by Nature & Essence.com

I was so impressed by  DFinney’s artistry that I jumped at the chance to use her services when she was offering mini sessions.

Booking my appointment was a easy
I was provided with the location at least 2 weeks before the shoot
Danielle provide me with a styling guide for cold weather outdoor shoots!
Danielle was prompt and prepared
Photo session was completed in 30 minutes as indicated
I received a preview the same day of the shoot
I was provided with a FREE 8×10

DFinney captured the most precious moments with the love of my life

After selecting photos I wanted for print….I received an amazing surprise in the mail today! 17005_10151272825592212_1413797007_n

The attention to detail was impeccable!   I was so impressed, I didn’t want to open the evelopes to see the pictures.  The quality of the pictures was not on Wal-Mart or CVS level, they’re professional printed on thick stock!
I am OFFICIALLY a DFinney customer for life!
Thank you Danielle for being the ultimate professional, thank you for your beautiful vision and thank you for capturing my precious moments!

I appreciate you!

Fall is here and with fall come beautiful leaves, cooler weather, fashionable boots and sweaters and DRY AIR = DRY HAIR!!!

Please ensure you drink plenty of water, hydrate your hair from the inside and the out! For Natural Beauties….a spray bottle is a MUST have! You can put purified/distilled water, any carrier oil of your choice, evoo (Extra Virgin Olive Oil), avocado oil (rich in vitamins and beta carotene), sweet almond and grapeseed oils are also EXCELLENT oils, aloe vera juice or gel, a touch of glycerin or honey (humectants – be careful during the winter months) after all the love of moisture…seal it all in with a butter or oil.

Humectants are used to attract, hold and retain moisture, optimizing the hair’s resilience, suppleness, and elasticity. Through their moisture absorbing properties, the give hair body and feeling of fullness. Humectants also prevent products from drying out. Natural humectants include vegetable glycerin, sorbitol and honey.

Do you have dry hair???

African American Hair is the MOST fragile out of all the races because of our lovely curls, so it must be handled with the utmost care! Our Oily hair is very dry, porous and brittle, mainly because the natural oils have a hard time reaching the ends. The more curls the more fragile and the only thing that can combat dry hair is moisture! Moisture also stops the hair from breaking. Our hair thrives on moisture; our Kids will only flourish when they are well moisturized. African American hair produces more sebum as other hair types. Sebum is the natural oils that hair produces naturally to protect and lubricate our Kids. Almost anything can disturb the moisture balance of your Kids and draw all the moisture out. Extreme weather conditions, Synthetic products, and heat can upset the balance of the hair and make hair very dry, which will lead to breakage!

I am asked by many women, how to combat dry hair??? When I am asked this question, I always ask the following questions:

  1. Do you hydrate your hair?? (hair steamer/DC with a plastic cap under the dryer)
  2. How often do you wash your hair?
  3. How often do you DC (deep condition) your hair?
  4. Does your shampoo contain sulfates?
  5. Do your products contain proteins?
  6. Do you spray your hair with water or use water-based products?
  7. Do you seal your hair with a butter or oil?
  8. Are you drinking enough water?
  9. AVOID products with drying alcohols

Everything listed above can lead to dry hair!

  • Hydration is essential to maintain healthy hair, whether it’s natural or relaxed! The ONLY thing that can hydrate your hair is WATER!!! Oils and butters seal the moisture in! I recommend the Huetiful Hair Steamer helps overcome the variables that lead to dry hair. It does this by restoring moisture 5x better than deep conditioners alone. The Huetiful Hair Steamer achieves these great results by opening up the cuticles of your hair to allow the conditioner or hair treatment to be pulled deeply inside the hair shaft. While the hair cuticles are open, the Huetiful Hair Steamer bathes your hair with warm mist to replenish lost moisture. TheHuetiful Hair Steamer works excellent with Kids by Nature’s Hydrating Shealoe Creamy Conditioner. But just don’t take it from us. Watch these testimonials from others who have used the Huetiful Hair Steamer.

  • Deep Conditioning is a formula designed to improve the health of your hair. Deep Conditioning really penetrates the hair shaft restoring vital vitamins and minerals to the hair. Either by putting a plastic cap on your hair and/or sitting under a hooded dryer. If you do not deep condition at least once a month, please start by deep conditioning 2x a month until you see your hair retaining moisture; once you see a difference in your hair you can cut back to once a month! Deep Conditioning is essential for retaining moisture!
  • Shampooing How often do you wash your hair? Washing your hair too often with a sulfate shampoo will dry out, damage hair, causing breakage. is an Most shampoo contain Sodium lauryl sulfates and/or laureth sulfates are in dish washing liquids to CUT GREASE, so it will do the same for your hair; it will strip all the oils from your hair leaving it dry and brittle. Shampooing is dehydrating for our curly locks and it is NOT necessary for cleansing our hair. Washing your hair with a hydrating conditioner, or Co-Washing is excellent for our hair; it will get rid of excess sweat and sebum. Co-washing will become your Curls best friend!
  • Proteins Hair is composed of strong structural protein called keratin. This is the same kind of protein that makes up the nails and the outer layer of skin. (Since your hair is 98% protein; unless you have color (which strips a layer of protein off so color can be deposited) you do not need a product that has protein to be added to your hair on a daily or weekly basis)
  • Protein once a month with deep conditioner could be sufficient (pay attention to your hair and find out what works for your hair)
  • Additional protein could cause hair to become dry, brittle and breakage will occur.
  • Having a good balance of protein aids in moisture absorption and help your hair retain moisture.
  • Each strand of hair consists of three layers.
    1. An innermost layer or medulla which is only present in large thick hairs.
    2. The middle layer known as the cortex. The cortex provides strength and boththe color and the texture of hair.
    3. The outermost layer is known as the cuticle. The cuticle is thin andcolorless and serves as a protector of the cortex.
  • Spraying Hair with Water/Using Water-Based Products remember H2O is the only substance on earth that will add moisture to you hair! This means H2O or water-based products (water is the first ingredient on the list) will MOISTURIZE your hair! YouMUST SEAL your hair once you’ve wet it or apply a water-based product; oils and butters creates barrier and forms a seal to lock in the moisture.
  • Good Conditioning Alcohols – Cetyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Alcohol

Simple Deep Conditioning Recipes:

Old Skool DC

1 Cup of Mayo

1 Egg (excellent protein treatment) (no egg if you are protein sensitive)

1 tsp of (Extra Virgin Olive Oil)

1 tsp of Macadamia Nut oil (or grapeseed, almond, jojoba)

1 tbsp of honey

Easy Hair Conditioning Mask

1 very ripe Avocado pitted

1 Egg (excellent protein treatment) (no egg if you are protein sensitive)

1 tsp of (Extra Virgin Olive Oil)

1 tsp of Macadamia Nut oil (or grapeseed, almond, jojoba, evoo – {extra virgin olive oil})

1 tbsp of honey

Leave on hair for 30 minutes or longer with a plastic cap or a hooded dryer or the Huetiful Hair Steamer!

4. Since hair is protein, a diet that is too low in protein may cause some thinning in hair or retardation in the growth cycle. Some conditioners contain proteins; when too much protein is put on the hair, either every week or every two weeks it can leave the hair very hard and brittle. Try to limited protein to the hair at least once a month. Especially if your diet is rich in proteins!

5. Having a Spray bottles is essential of natural hair! It is beneficial to add water to your hair before styling. Water (moisture) keeps your hair flexible for styling and it will not break easily and hair can reach its maximum length.

Simple Spritz Recipe

1 – 6-8 oz spray bottle

4 – 6 oz of distilled or purified water (please do not use tap water)

¼ cup of aloe vera juice or gel

1 tbsp of your favorite oil (grapeseed, almond, jojoba, evoo (Extra Virgin Olive Oil), Macadamia Nut oil)

1/2 tsp of glycerin

5-10 – drops of essential oil of your choice

Oils Excellent for Moisturizing Hair

Grapeseed oil is popular because it is odorless and full of minerals and vitamins that help strengthen your hair. It is odorless oil, and can help add shine and moisture to your hair. Grapeseed oil is known for having a high content of linoleic acid, is an unsaturated omega-6 fatty acid that supports cell health. Grape Seed oil is also excellent for protecting the hair against high heat!

Avocado oil light green based oil is derived from the fatty pulp and seed of the fruit; that is rich in vitamins A, B1, B2, D & E that especially helpful to fry, dull skin and hair.

A JOURNEY WORTH EMBARKING FOR THE MIND, BODY AND HAIR: “NATURAL IS NOT A FAD” 2012

An educational event that proves that the concept of natural hair is not all about embracing natural beauty. It’s also about the exceptional message given by the experience: Embrace. Educate. Love.

Dallas, TX, September 4th, 2012 — Join Koils by Nature at their 2nd Annual Natural is Not FadTM on September 16, 2012 from 11-7p.m. at the Westin hotel in Alexandria, Virginia. The event that brought together an audience of 350 last year, anticipates sharing education as well as advice

about living a natural lifestyle to a diverse audience this year. This event will reach out to women, men and children in the Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and DMV areas.

“This event is not another natural hair meet up or expo,” says CEO of Koils by Nature, Pamela Jenkins. “It’s an experience! This event will show the world that natural hair is not a fad, it’s how we were meant to be!”

The event proves that Koils by Nature has created a dream team, with media coverage by outlets such as Essence, NBC4 and Black Girl with Long Hair as well as a lineup including YouTube Media Mogul, Dr. Nina “BeautifulBrwnBabyDol” Ellis-Hervey and Guinness World Record Holder for the Largest Afro, Aevin Dugas.

“The speakers and educators are top notch experts [who] will be educating women, men and children!” Pamela Jenkins excitedly stated. “Natural is NOT a FadTM 2012, is an unforgettable natural experience in Alexandria, VA where you will be exposed to an intimate platform of workshops, education, Q&A and [a] fashion show with an opportunity to meet and speak with some of the most influential pioneers of the natural hair industry.”

“Ladies and gentlemen who attend this event, will receive education of the mind, body & hair…. along with great shopping,” Pamela Jenkins said. “This event is about education, education and more education! I believe if you [educate]…about natural hair and living a natural lifestyle, they will be more inclined to stay natural! Embrace. Educate. Love.”

Meet Aevin Dugas at Natural is NOT a Fad 2012

GUINNESS WORLD RECORD HOLDER
WORLD’S LARGEST NATURAL AFRO

Get Your Tickets Here

Aevin Dugas, 35 years old from Napoleonville, LA has been natural for 12 years strong, and intends to never go back to chemicals. When she went natural 12 years ago her intentions were not to aim for the title of the “World’s Largest Afro” in the Guinness Book of World Records. In the beginning Aevin intended to go natural due to the constant hassle of chemically treating her hair & the damage it was causing to her tresses. A worker for her family’s business which is in the independent living field, Aevin has made it her mission to promote natural hair among not just the African American community, but throughout all nationalities. She believes that one should be proud of the way they were born, and not hide what was naturally given to them, children especially. As the world record holder Aevin is not only a trend setter, but a humble naturalista that will continue to promote the natural hair!

Growing up as the middle child of eleven, Marisol’s childhood was far from normal.  Her father was a renowned boxing trainer whose fighters included Sugar Ray Leonard, Lennox Lewis and Riddick Bowe among others.  From a young age on, she was her father’s right hand woman in the corner at the local gym, and traveled to fights around the world.  Despite this exposure, Marisol has always remained grounded and humble.

After graduating high school, Marisol attended Community College, and modeled in Washington, DC and New York in addition to acting and singing.  She eventually became disillusioned with the fast life and joined the Army, as she wanted to serve her country.  Although she loved the rigors of Army life and the education she received at Saint Leo University, she was honorably discharged after five years, due to nagging foot injuries.

Marisol is the proud mother of four: a fifteen year-old, five year-old and three year-old twins.  Currently, she lives with her partner Ben and their children in Hyattsville Maryland.  She is an avid blogger, and loves working out, fashion and her natural hair (of course!).  Above all, she loves spending time with her family.
